An Israeli Border Patrol officer on Friday bent over and used his hands to fold a Palestinian-style fence, as he prepares to dismantle a wall along the frontier with the occupied West Bank.
The man, identified by security officials as Hani Shukri, had been preparing for a monthlong project, in which he had to fold the border fence on both sides of the barrier with Egypt and the Jordan River.
On Friday, he was preparing to remove it on the eastern border.
The Border Patrol said Shukrri was detained in the West Bank after he crossed the border illegally, and his arrest was a security violation.
The PA’s security forces, who oversee the fence, said he was carrying a knife.
The Border Police said Shinkri was not affiliated with Hamas or other Palestinian terrorist groups, and the man was arrested without incident.
The authorities said Shinkingri is suspected of trying to smuggle weapons to Palestinian militants.
The move was not the first time Shukrin had tried to cross the border.
In 2013, he set up a roadblock on the border with Egypt, where he used the road as a way to pass through the Jordan to the Gaza Strip, where Palestinian militants were known to operate.
In November 2013, Shukrilis wife was kidnapped by a group of Palestinian terrorists who had taken her to Gaza.
He managed to escape the kidnapping, but Israeli security forces killed him a few days later.
Hamas has not officially claimed responsibility for the kidnapping of Shukrani, who is believed to be the first PA citizen to have been kidnapped by Hamas.
